Kathy Butler, supervisor of student affairs, addresses the Marion City School Board regarding the district's contract with OhioGuidestone during Monday's board meeting.

Tensions erupt at Marion City Schools Board meeting on mental health

A disagreement over contracts for emergency student mental health resources arose again at the Marion City Schools School Board meeting in September on Monday.

Following the August board meeting, when board member Rocky Ratliff accused Acting Superintendent Steve Mazzi of not wanting to discuss contracts in public when asked to ask his questions at the advance regarding the cost of services contracted through The Village Network, Inc., Ratliff said he would not approach Mazzi this week with his concerns about the district’s contract with OhioGuidestone before the board for approval.

However, even before this discussion began, the only community member to speak at the public hearing, District resident Kevin Hall, rose to speak.

He explained that although he spoke last month to thank the council for the positive progress in the district and the community, he felt he had to speak to the council again after Ratliff challenged the superintendent and put three staff members on site at the August meeting.
