In the first eight months of 2022, nearly 2.2 million students nationwide who received medical examination and treatment were paid by the health insurance agency for a total amount of nearly 1 770 billion VND (71,717,069 USD).

In addition, the health insurance agency paid huge sums for the examination and treatment fees of many students. Specifically, 537 students underwent 2,535 types of medical examinations and treatments that cost around 100-200 million VND each. In addition, another 190 students received 1,435 medical examinations and treatments worth VND 200-500 million each, and the agency covered over VND 500 million for 20 insured students undergoing 152 types of medical services. Even, many cases whose examination and treatment cost up to around VND 1 billion each were covered by the insurance agency.

For example, an insured patient from My Thanh Trung township in Mekong Delta province of Tam Binh district of Vinh Long received treatment including ventricular septal defect (membrane part), Candida sepsis, rheumatic aortic insufficiency (severe 4/4), acute and subacute infective endocarditis (aortic root abscess) 24 times in 2021 at Ho Chi Minh City Cho Ray Hospital, Vinh Long Province General Hospital and the general hospital in the city of Can Tho, in the Mekong Delta. The cost that the health insurance fund paid for this patient was 1.18 billion VND.

So far, the Health Insurance Fund has paid many students with incurable and chronic diseases at a cost of up to billions of Vietnamese dong, helping them and their families to reduce the burden of medical examinations and medical costs. treatment.

Vietnam social insurance data shows that health insurance coverage for students has increased steadily over the years with an upward trend.

In the 2021-2022 school year, about 18.8 million children participated in health insurance, reaching 96 percent of the total number of students in the country. This shows that parents’ awareness of the benefits and importance of health insurance participation for their children has improved. Many parents proactively buy health insurance even when their children are in good health, considering it the best way to prevent and deal with risks by participating in health insurance.

According to the regulations, the monthly payment of the health insurance premium is equal to 4.5% of the basic salary and the students receive a 30% aid from the state budget; students therefore only pay 70% of the cost of insurance. According to this calculation, the payment for the full year is 804,600 VND but students only pay an actual amount of 563,220 VND per year, the rest being covered by the state budget.

In addition to the 30% state budget support, many provinces and cities also have additional support policies to achieve the goal of 100% student health insurance participation in the 2022 school year. -2023. For example, the northern province of Ha Giang provides an additional 70% support to ethnic minority children; therefore, all children from ethnic minority groups are covered by the insurance agency while Northern Hung Yen Province provides 30% assistance while Dien Bien Province, Son La Province, of Ba Ria – Vung Tau grant aid of 20% respectively. Elsewhere in the country, Kon Tum province, Tra Vinh province and Dong Thap province give 10% support respectively. The provinces of Dak Lak and Tien Giang cover 5% of health insurance costs.
