For many people, there has never been a more difficult time to be a smart consumer. Thanks to the huge variety of products and services available in today’s marketplace, many consumers can become racked by indecision as they attempt to differentiate the minute details of hundreds of unique items.

Thankfully the rise of the Internet has been a godsend for consumers looking for an easy way to compare different products. With price comparison websites, a web surfer can log on and instantly evaluate the many varieties of a product on a single page, which makes analysis as simple as possible.

This research can save you hundreds of dollars on your expenses. Consider, for instance, consumers who need to compare credit cards. At first glance, it would seem as if there are almost as many credit cards as there are people who have credit cards. There are credit cards that give people cash back, rewards points, airline travel miles and a variety of other benefits.

With a website that allows consumers to compare credit cards, they can immediately discover the interest rates and other fees of different credit cards, which makes it easy to find out which card is the one that will save its holder the most money through reduced interest payments. In fact, if the cardholder regularly keep a balance on their credit card, a price comparison site could be the difference between a balanced budget and financial ruin.

Of course, a consumer can study just about any product or service on a price comparison website, which will ensure that they are always getting the best deal available. In the days before the Internet, companies would try to use the lack of information available to consumers in order to convince them to purchase less-than-ideal products that only benefited the companies themselves. However, their power to control the marketplace is over; that power is now in the hands of consumers.

This is especially true in the finance industry, which has traditionally been an industry systematically designed to transfer money from customers’ bank accounts to the coffers of the financial services firms that were supposed to be helping those consumers. Thankfully there is now a price comparison website for essentially every financial service a customer would ever need.

For anyone looking for a loan on a house or car, most banks now offer their interest rates online. Alternatively, for those consumers looking for a better interest rate on their deposits, they can easily find current interest rates on a variety of checking, savings and money-market accounts. In addition, certificates of deposit can be easily compared for those looking for an even higher interest rate.

Insurance has been another area where price comparison websites has forced companies to offer more competitive rates; indeed, some companies now offer to provide consumers with free quotes from other insurers to make the process ever easier. Regardless of the type of insurance that is needed, whether it be health, life or disability insurance, rest assured that there is a price comparison site out there to make the shopping hassle free.

If anyone is finding it difficult to cut expenses in their budget, it may be time to start visiting some price comparison websites. Not only can it make everyone a smarter consumer, it can save them hundreds of dollars in the process.

I use shopping bots to compare prices of various products online. I compare prices and other factors online before I buy. I find that technology has made this easier.

I find that my iphone is pretty helpful in this area. I use the shopsavvy app (free!) to scan the barcodes of things I want to buy in the store to see my other options. You’re so right, price comparing is super important.

Amazon has an app for the iPhone that does this. It caused all kinds of consternation from local merchants when it came out in December.

There is also much to be said for “not looking back” once you make a purchase at a price you like. Of course, you don’t want to get ripped off, but it really doesn’t make sense to endlessly hunt for better deals once you’ve pulled the trigger for a purchase.
