I love the show “Bang for Your Buck“. It showcases three couples who put equal dollar amounts into a specific area of their homes for renovation. A designer and a local real estate expert review the properties and determine which couple received the greatest return for their investing in property.  I do believe that some of the return on investment does pertain to the location of the properties since all of the properties are not in the same town or section of town.

Some of the participants who did not receive the biggest ‘bang for your buck’ acknowledged that their decorating choices were very personal and taste specific. Thus, making their homes potentially harder to sell in the future. These participants never really considered their personal residence as investing in property. Those who did achieve the biggest ‘bang for your buck’ seemed to either have a long range vision for their property or lucked out by having very classic taste which is easily marketable.

What I have always wondered about the show which has never been discussed is which house received the greatest return on investment overall. The show only looks at a particular area of the house but does not consider what the owners initially paid for the house and the current total value of the house. I think it would interesting to know if the owners were looking for BMV houses for sale when they purchased their property. I also wonder if they considered the renovation at the time they purchased the property as well. The owners do show pictures of the previous room and why they felt the area needed to be remodeled.

I have never purchased a property with the intention of remodeling it. The task seems extremely time consuming to me. However, from this show it is evident that it can produce from time to time a good return on investment or at least preserve the value of your home.

Have you ever seen “Bang for Your Buck”? What are your thoughts about the show? Have you ever remodeled a property?

One Response to The show “Bang for Your Buck” on HGTV…

  1. I have seen the show, but I have to stay away from HGTV in generally. It’s really too addicting. You bring up some points that I always am curious about. I always want to know the financial background and details, so that I have better context as to what’s going on.

I have been through a renovation. I loved the results but did not like the process. I would definitely do it again though because it was worth the effort.
