My advice always put money in savings even if you are tight. Make sure you have something for an emergency

  65. My best advice is never get a credit card. It will keep you from impulse buying. If you get one for emergencies, put it in a locked safe so it is “out of sight and out of mind”. You won’t be inclined to use it.

    • Super Frugalette says:

I haven’t used a credit card in years. It is a whole different feeling when you see it hit the checking account.

  66. Challenge yourself at least one month a year to do a “no spend month”, where you buy only the necessities: milk, fresh vegetables (you might not even have to do that in the summer if you have a garden). It makes you realize just how often you really don’t need to buy stuff.

  67. heather h says:

  73. petra says:

Frugal tip: Double up on savings — not only buy products on sale, but use a coupon, too.

  74. Pedro says:

Why throw away your money on credit card interest? Always pay your credit card bill in full each month. Never purchase something with your credit card that you can’t pay for when the statement arrives.

  75. Mary Elderton says:

Money saving tip: I read a study a few years ago that suggested that the more often you go to the store, the more you spend–even if you are using coupons (I am sure this had to do with average coupon use and not the “extreme” version.)The conclusion was that it was best to do larger shopping, less frequently.

    • Super Frugalette says:

I agree. I think there is a facebook page that says something like “I went to Target for shampoo and came out with $80 worth of stuff”. I think the more we see, the more we want or think we need.

Live simply. I mean really simply. A lot of my friends buy things on time, like cars and houses. I live in a very small, simple house. And it is paid for. They make huge monthly mortgage car payments.

Don’t ever buy anything on time. There is nothing worth making payments and paying interest on – with the possible exception of a house within your means. I mean nothing.

Spend less than you make. There is an old saying about “making dimes and spending dollars.’ Try to do just the opposite…

  110. Katie says:

My best piece of financial advice is to pay off all your credit cards each month so you never carry a balance.

  111. Peter S says:

Day to day advice – make a shopping list and menu, stick to them as much as possible and go to the store as little as possible. That tends to save money overall.

Longer term – avoid car leases if possible, buy used and save cash, pay off your debts in an orderly fashion (Dave Ramsey’s advice works as long as you follow it), and try not to take out really expensive student loans. :-)

  112. Kim says:

Always look for coupons online before shopping or dining out. You’d be amazed at what you could find!

  113. Linda Lansford says:

best piece of financial advice is to have money taken out of your paycheck directly deposited to your savings

  114. Karen says:

My best financial advice is to use the envelope system. Separate your spending into envelopes marked for each- groceries, fun money, gas, etc. Once each is gone, it’s gone. My best tip is to buy things when they are on sale and you have coupon. That way you get double the savings.

  123. petra says:

Always comparison shop online before you buy.

  124. Pedro says:

I believe everyone should have at least 6 months worth of mortgage or rent money saved away in case your lose your job or for an emergency. I also believe that if your company offers a 401K plan, you should contribute (especially if your employer matches or contributes each year as well). Only spend what you can afford (do not go over your means). Try and avoid credit cards unless you have to and if you do use your credit card, make sure its an amount you can pay off the next month in full so you do not pay interest.
